Notre Dame Prep defeated Pomperaug 4-0 on Sunday to secure its fifth Suburban County Conference girls soccer title in the past six years.
The match took place at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury. Notre Dame Prep, the Lancers, entered the game with a 17-0-2 record. Pomperaug finished the season with a 14-3-2 mark. This victory marks the Lancers' second consecutive SWC title.
The team has reached the SWC championship match for six straight seasons. They lost only once during that run, falling to Brookfield in 2024. The Lancers outscored their opponents 11-0 across the three tournament games.
Goalkeeper Cara Williams earned the tournament MVP award. She recorded three shutouts and did not concede a goal during the competition. Williams credited her teammates for her performance. "I honestly couldn't do this without my teammates," Williams said. "They always help me get better."
Junior forward Kolbe McCray scored two goals in the final. Maria Rocha Reaes opened the scoring with a penalty kick at 21:15 in the first half. McCray added the second goal at 60:54. Truth Houston, assisted by Siena Rosa, scored at 72:16. McCray closed out the scoring at 79:20.
Coach Wayne Mones attributed the win to the quality of players who choose to attend the school. "If they want to be a champion, they come to Notre Dame," Mones said. He noted that the team has allowed only four goals all season. "Our defense has been great and Cara Williams, our goalie, has been great," he added.
Pomperaug reached its first SWC championship game since 2018 after defeating Newtown in a penalty shootout during the semifinals. Notre Dame Prep will next compete in the CIAC Class LL tournament. The team aims to reach its first final in that bracket since 2023.
