The musical calendar for the Denver and Boulder area is dense with high-profile jazz performances this month, creating a competition for attention among local venues and national artists. The schedule runs from early November through the end of the month, featuring both established legends and newer voices in the genre.
Guitarist John Scofield leads the bill with two shows. He will present his "Electrospective" program, which revisits compositions from his more than 50-year career, at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts in Denver on Nov. 7. The following day, Nov. 8, he will perform with the same group at the Boulder Theater. His supporting band includes organist Larry Goldings, drummer Adam Deitch, and bassist Oteil Burbridge, who is known for his work with The Allman Brothers and Dead & CO.
Vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa will bring her quartet to Dazzle in Denver on Nov. 3 for two performances. Her recent Blue Note Records debut, "Diavola," is a 38-minute recording that emphasizes ballads. Dazzle is also the venue for saxophonist Grace Kelly, who will perform with her group on Nov. 20 and 21. Kelly, who recorded her first album at age 12, previously played in the house band for Stephen Colbert's television program.
Other scheduled events include the Brian Blade Fellowship at Dazzle on Nov. 24 and 25, and a John Coltrane tribute by saxophonist Azar Lawrence on Dec. 10. The Nocturne venue in Denver will host the Brian Claxton Quintet on Nov. 1 and 8, while Kenny Garrett and his Sounds From the Ancestors Band will appear at Dazzle on Nov. 5 and 6.
The month concludes with Record Store Day Black Friday on Nov. 27. Independent vinyl retailers will sell exclusive releases from artists including Albert Ayler, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Bill Evans, and Charlie Parker. The event marks the final major public gathering of the local jazz season before the next annual festival.
Organizers for the 2027 Denver Jazz Fest have already announced performers for the April 6-11 event next year. The roster includes bassist Ron Carter, vocalist Kurt Elling, and the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra. Tickets for the upcoming November shows are available online through the respective venue websites.
