Deion Sanders clarified his stance on recent media criticism during a weekly news conference on Tuesday. The Colorado head coach stated that a suggestion to pay individuals $50,000 to stop mentioning his name was intended as humor rather than a serious financial offer.

The comments originated from Christopher Neely, a YouTube creator known as Uncle Neely who has supported Sanders since the Jackson State tenure. Neely recently appeared on a roundtable internet program where he discussed the dynamic between the coach and his detractors. He claimed that Sanders told some critics, 'Hey man, let's just do this. I give you $50,000 to not mention my name for a year.' Neely added that no one had accepted the deal yet.

Sanders was present in the room when reporters raised the topic. He immediately corrected the interpretation of the statement. 'Oh no, no, no! I think you misinterpreted that,' Sanders said. He explained that he was commenting on how some people profit from his brand. He said he would love to give money to stop them from mentioning his name to see how far that dynamic would go.

The coach emphasized that he has faced criticism throughout his career as both a player and a head coach. Sanders said he would never formally offer money to a man to stay silent. 'I don't give a darn what you say about me,' he stated. He described the remark as a joke about people prospering off his name and brand.

Sanders is in his fourth season at Colorado. His arrival returned national attention to the program. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter contributed to a 9-4 record last season that included a bowl game appearance. However, the team has a 2-5 start this season following a 3-9 finish last year. The Buffaloes have lost five consecutive games and play Kansas State on Saturday.

Sanders noted that his overall record at Colorado is 18-26. He reflected on his Hall of Fame playing career in the NFL, where he was known for showmanship but not verbal taunting. 'I never belittled, downgraded, hated,' Sanders said. He recalled dancing and high-stepping on the field but never spiking the ball or insulting opponents. He stated that he was raised to be respectful and would never insult reporters or their families.
