Yordan Alvarez secured two major awards from his teammates on Wednesday, capping a 2026 campaign in which he led Major League Baseball in nearly every offensive statistic. The Houston Astros outfielder was named the American League Most Outstanding Player and the American League Comeback Player of the Year by the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Alvarez’s recognition follows a season in which he posted the highest OPS in baseball. He batted .316 with 42 home runs, 106 runs batted in, and 105 runs scored. His 1.033 on-base plus slugging percentage made him the only qualified hitter in the sport to finish with an OPS over 1.000. He also won the batting titles for both the American League and Major League Baseball.

The outfielder led the American League in a wide range of offensive categories. He recorded the most total bases (341), extra-base hits (77), walks (109), and intentional walks (33) in the league. His slugging percentage stood at .601, while his on-base percentage reached .432. His wRC+ was 181 and his OPS+ was 190, figures that indicated his performance was the best in the game relative to his league.

Alvarez earned the Most Outstanding Player award by outperforming his peers in voting. He defeated Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays and Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals for the top honor. This result is widely expected to mirror the outcome of the American League Most Valuable Player award, which is scheduled for announcement shortly after the postseason concludes. Alvarez is considered the prohibitive favorite to win that individual trophy.

The Comeback Player of the Year distinction acknowledged Alvarez’s return to full health after a 2025 season in which injuries limited him to 48 games. In 2026, he missed only four games, marking the first time in his major league career he was fully healthy for an entire campaign. This durability allowed him to sustain his offensive output over 158 games, a stretch that contributed to his league-leading totals.

The Astros finished the 2026 regular season with an 81-81 record. The team advanced to the postseason but was eliminated in two games. This brief appearance meant Alvarez’s individual accolades arrived during a period when the team was no longer competing for a championship. The awards were announced late Wednesday morning, providing a focal point for the Houston fanbase during the final weeks of the season.

Alvarez joins a short list of Astros to win the Comeback Player of the Year award. Justin Verlander is the only other player in franchise history to receive that specific honor. Other Astros who have won MLBPA awards include Jeff Bagwell and Jose Altuve, who won the AL Outstanding Player award, and pitchers Mike Hampton, Dallas Keuchel, and Verlander, who won the Pitcher of the Year award.

The outfielder also received weekly and monthly honors during the 2026 season. He won three American League Player of the Week awards and two Player of the Month awards. He was selected to the All-Star Game in July, marking his fourth selection. Other Astros players received nominations for individual awards, including Jeremy Pena for a Silver Slugger and Christian Walker and Cam Smith for Gold Gloves.
