Elena Rybakina secured the year-end world number one ranking for the first time in her career after defeating Yulia Putintseva on Thursday. The 27-year-old won the second-round match at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo with scores of 6-2 and 6-3. This victory guaranteed her position ahead of Aryna Sabalenka, the current world number two, who can no longer overtake her in the rankings before the season concludes.

Rybakina arrived at the Ariake Coliseum following a strong week in China. She captured her fourth title of the season at the Ningbo Open, marking her first victory while holding the top ranking. Her 2026 campaign has been defined by major successes, including wins at the Australian Open and the US Open last month. These results increased her Grand Slam total to three, joining her 2022 Wimbledon title.

The Kazakh athlete had a brief setback earlier in the month. She lost her opening match in Beijing and withdrew from the Wuhan Open due to a leg injury. Despite this dip in form, she recovered to defend her title in Ningbo, setting the stage for the Tokyo event where she received a bye into the last 16.

Rybakina now faces Leylah Fernandez in the next round. The two players met in the final in Ningbo last week, a match Fernandez won. Fernandez advanced to the Tokyo quarterfinals by defeating Elise Mertens 6-2 and 7-6(8).

The tournament serves as a final test before the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, California. The top eight players of the season will compete there from November 8 to 15. Rybakina is currently pursuing her 16th career title as the season winds down.
