Port Charlotte quarterback Logan Flaherty recorded his 100th career touchdown on Friday night during the final regular season game of his high school career. The milestone arrived in a 42-6 win over the Charlotte Tarpons at Harbor Nissan Stadium. The Pirates held a 42-0 lead after the third quarter, having missed only one field goal on their opening drive. The result extends the Pirates' dominance in the Peace River Rivalry, which has been decided by seven or fewer points for the first time in five years.
Flaherty, who is preparing to join Florida State University, spent the postgame period signing autographs and taking photos with fans. His path to the county's most decorated player was not immediate. He played his freshman season at Charlotte High School, where injury limited him to eight games during a 4-7 campaign. He transferred to Port Charlotte the following year and has since emerged as the most versatile player in the region.
The quarterback has developed into a dual-threat leader who can run, extend plays, and throw to any position on the field. He guided Port Charlotte to its first regional championship last season. This season, the team aims for its first state title before Flaherty departs for college. His performance this year has shifted the narrative of the rivalry from a simple scoreboard contest to a showcase of local talent.
Flaherty has prepared for the attention that comes with such a record. He described practicing his signature in math class during his freshman year, flipping to the back of his book to write it repeatedly until the motion became automatic. This preparation reflects the standards he has set for himself, which now extend beyond Charlotte County.
"I would sit in my math class since my freshman year, and when we were taking notes, I would flip to the back of my book and just do my signature the whole period, so I’ve learned how to do it fluently," Flaherty said. He views his role as a leader who must represent the community with discipline and humility.
The player believes that athletes should use their ability to build the area rather than just compete. "Let’s not do it and be cocky and do it the wrong way," he said. "Let’s be a good football player and continue to lead and build this Port Charlotte community that’s an awesome place." He wants to show the state and the nation that southwest Florida can compete at the highest levels.
While the 100-touchdown mark is a historic achievement, Flaherty is focused on a specific county record. He cites former Charlotte High running back Mike Bellamy as the benchmark, believing Bellamy holds the record with 110 career touchdowns. According to MaxPreps, Bellamy has 104 career touchdowns. Flaherty intends to close the gap in his remaining games.
"100 touchdowns is a blessing, but I’m not done there," Flaherty said. "I want to continue to go. I believe, correct me if I’m wrong, but Mike Bellamy has the county record at 110, so I would like to set the goal for myself to get to that."
