Funke Akindele will release her eighth major theatrical feature, 'The Four: No One Fights Alone,' on December 11. The film centers on four women who fight for the future of a young man they love. Akindele aims for the movie to reach international viewers while maintaining its Nigerian cultural roots.

She has become the most commercially successful filmmaker in Africa following the 2025 release of 'Behind the Scenes.' That film earned more than 2 billion naira, roughly $1.6 million, at the box office. It marked the first time a Nollywood movie crossed that financial threshold. The title was also streamed on Netflix, which expanded its global reach.

Akindele is the first African filmmaker to top the Nigerian box office for three consecutive years. Her 2023 film, 'A Tribe Called Judah,' became the first Nollywood movie to earn 1 billion naira, or more than $745,000. The story follows five brothers with different fathers who rob a store to save their sick mother, a role played by Akindele.

She stated that she wrote the screenplay to tell the story as it is without sugarcoating. She was inspired by a woman she knew who had seven children by seven men and faced societal judgment. Akindele said her writing style relies on authenticity and quality rather than just ambition.

Nollywood is the world's second-largest film industry by volume, behind India, according to UNESCO. It produces more than 2,500 films annually, surpassing Hollywood's output. The industry employs more than 1 million people, making it the second-largest source of jobs in Nigeria.

Akindele's career began in 1998 when she landed her first role in the UNFPA-sponsored sitcom 'I Need to Know.' She has since acted in more than 100 films. Her 2008 movie 'Jenifa' was her first major financial success. The film, about a village girl moving to the city for university, launched her to stardom. The 2011 sequel 'The Return of Jenifa' was her first theatrical release, and the 2024 film 'Everybody Loves Jenifa' was her most expensive production.

She noted that distribution remains a major barrier for African filmmakers. She believes global collaboration will help break that barrier by sharing experience, ideas, and technology. She encourages writers to create authentic stories that can cross borders and resonate with diverse audiences.

Akindele hopes her work will leave a lasting impact by giving access to other women. She aims to create platforms for their voices to be heard and help them develop their crafts. She wants to be remembered for breaking barriers for those who come after her.
