Kimi Antonelli will determine the outcome of the Formula 1 season at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver requires a ninth-place finish in the Sunday race to clinch the championship. This result would make him the youngest world champion in the sport's history, surpassing the record set by Sebastian Vettel in 2010 at age 23.

Antonelli arrived in Mexico after suffering from a viral infection that forced him to skip a press conference on Thursday. Despite the illness, he performed well in the Friday practice sessions. He finished second in the first session and fourth in the second. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari led both sessions, maintaining strong form after finishing third in the previous two races.

The path to the title for Antonelli has been swift. He won five consecutive races earlier in the season, moving past his teammate George Russell, who struggled to find pace. Russell finished eighth in Austin last week and is currently trying to explain his lack of speed. Antonelli also secured his ninth victory of the season in Texas prior to the Mexican stop.

Antonelli could potentially claim the title without scoring points if neither Lewis Hamilton nor George Russell wins the race. However, he aims to finish high in the standings. After his recent win, he said, “I'm very excited. I would love to clinch the title with style and a big result.” He noted that he plans to enjoy every moment because these are times that will always be remembered.

This championship would mark a return of an Italian winner to the top spot. Antonelli would be the first Italian driver to win the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Mercedes also stands a chance to win the constructors' championship for the first time since 2021, though this requires a high point haul from both Antonelli and Russell combined with a poor showing by Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, faced technical issues on Friday. He reported a loss of power in the second practice session, specifically at turn 13. Hamilton told his team over the radio, “Something is wrong with the car. I lost all the power in turn 13.” Ferrari engineers instructed him to exit the track and stop the car.

Incidents also marked the second practice session when Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson made contact, resulting in a red flag. Lawson stated via radio that Verstappen “just came on top of me,” adding that the Dutch driver does this literally every weekend. Verstappen described the incident as not very intelligent behavior. Both drivers were called before the stewards.

Cadillac continues to face challenges in its debut season. Colton Herta drove Valtteri Bottas's car in the first session, finishing last, 3.237 seconds behind Leclerc. Herta is collecting points for his F1 superlicense, which would qualify him for a seat next season. The team has not scored a point yet this year and has dealt with persistent brake overheating issues.

Sergio Perez recently signed a contract extension through 2029, but Cadillac has not confirmed whether Bottas will remain. Perez said Herta is doing a good job and providing useful feedback to the team. Herta has had a disappointing year in Formula 2 and currently sits 19th in the standings.

The altitude of 2,240 meters in Mexico City presents a specific challenge for engines and brakes. The thinner air reduces oxygen, leading to power loss and increased heat. George Russell noted that Ferrari may have an advantage due to its use of a smaller turbocharger. He said, “It's going to be very interesting. I think the turbo lag is going to be a key factor for many teams this weekend.”
