Formula 1 has a new world champion. Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes secured the title on Sunday after finishing third in the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Antonelli, a 20-year-old from Bologna, became the youngest driver to win the championship. He beat the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel by more than three years. Vettel won his first title in 2010 at age 23.
The Italian driver also restored Italy to the top of the sport. Alberto Ascari was the last Italian to win a Formula 1 title in 1953. Antonelli is now the third Italian in history to hold the crown, following Giuseppe Farina in 1950 and Ascari.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the race in Mexico City. It was his 74th career victory and his third of the current season. Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari finished second, while Antonelli took third place to mathematically secure the championship.
The Mexico Grand Prix was the 19th race of the season. Four races remain on the calendar before the season ends. Antonelli's win marks a historic achievement for his team and his country.
