Madison Heights police responded to a Spirit Halloween store on John R, south of 14 Mile Road, after 2 p.m. Friday, where an argument between two parties ended with gunfire. One person drew a firearm and shot another, according to the police chief. The shooter was then injured by the victim's family. Both men, in their 20s, were taken to separate hospitals and are under guard. Their conditions are unknown.
Witnesses at the scene described the moments around the shooting. Mika Wilson, 21, said she was in line with her mother when she heard a loud pop. "We thought it was a balloon because it's a party store," Wilson said, adding that she then heard multiple shots and "People started scattering like ants." Another witness said her boss kicked down a door and the pair ran out the back. A third witness, who arrived to shop and saw police in the parking lot, said, "We got here and saw the police and I guess there was a shooting that happened."
The Madison Heights Police Department requested assistance from Troy, Ferndale, and Hazel Park police. The city has asked the public to avoid the area and follow law enforcement instructions. Officials state there is no immediate danger to the public. Photos of the scene were provided by Ashley Griffin.
The investigation is ongoing, and the Tribune will update this story as more details become available.
