A supplemental complaint was filed this week in South Dakota, asking state officials to pull specific financial records regarding a Republican state senate campaign. The filing targets a single transaction that has drawn scrutiny from local party leaders.
The dispute centers on a $5,063 payment made to South Eastern Strategy, a political consulting firm. The original complaint, submitted on October 28, questioned whether this sum was incorrectly listed as a contribution from a business entity. Under current state law, corporate contributions to legislative candidates are capped at $1,000. The new filing requests payment records, invoices, bank documentation, and any amended reports to determine if the money was paid for services or counted as a contribution.
Taffy Howard, the candidate in question, previously told KOTA-TV that an amended report had been filed to fix an oversight. However, Democratic officials state they have not received documentation to back up that explanation. The party maintains that this action is a request for an official review rather than a claim that a violation has already been proven. They are seeking transparency to verify how the transaction fits under state classification rules.
The South Dakota Secretary of State’s Office has already moved the initial complaint to Attorney General Marty Jackley for review. The supplemental filing adds specific document requests to that ongoing process, focusing on the classification of the payment between Howard’s campaign and the consulting firm.
The party emphasizes that they are looking for the paper trail to settle the question. They want to know if the $5,063 represents a legal expense for professional services or a contribution that exceeds the statutory limit for business entities.
