Jury selection begins Monday at a courthouse in downtown Los Angeles for the retrial of Jonathan Rinderknecht, the 30-year-old former Uber driver accused of starting the January 2025 Palisades wildfire. The first trial ended in a mistrial in late 2025 after a 2-10 split among jurors.

Federal prosecutors allege that on December 31, 2025, Rinderknecht dropped a passenger off in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood and walked to a hillside clearing where he ignited a brush fire. Officials stated that this initial blaze, known as the Lachman fire, burned eight acres before firefighters extinguished it on January 2. Embers from that fire reportedly smoldered underground for days before reigniting and spreading into the larger disaster that killed 12 people and destroyed thousands of structures.

Rinderknecht has pleaded not guilty to charges including destruction of property by fire, arson affecting interstate commerce, and setting timber on fire. During the previous trial, the prosecution characterized him as an isolated individual motivated by grievances against the wealthy. Prosecutors presented evidence that he used the AI tool ChatGPT to generate images of a burning city months before the incident. Prosecutor Danbee C Kim told the jury during closing arguments that Rinderknecht lit the fire to take back power.

A major point of contention in the first trial was the role of the Los Angeles fire department. Although jurors were barred from hearing direct evidence about the department's handling of the initial Lachman fire, they appeared influenced by that context. One juror who voted for acquittal told reporters that while there may have been evidence he started the first fire, she questioned his responsibility for the entire Palisades fire given the negligence of others.

For the retrial, federal prosecutors have secured a tentative court order instructing jurors not to consider the adequacy of the initial fire suppression efforts. This moves to separate the case from the ongoing public debate regarding the fire department's response. The defense team had previously argued against the use of the AI-generated images, claiming they were poor evidence of intent and carried excessive emotional weight.

The case is being closely watched as victims of the Palisades fire continue legal actions against the city for damages. The defense team recently argued in a court filing that the images were output produced by a program rather than direct statements from Rinderknecht. They noted that the prompts showed the program did not always produce exactly what he asked for, making the visuals unreliable indicators of his specific intentions at the time of the fire.
