Northlands Rescue Mission in Grand Forks, North Dakota, has appointed a new kitchen manager to oversee its food operations and support staff. Darren Hawpetoss, a former Army culinary specialist, assumed the role in August after working with the emergency shelter for nearly three years.
Hawpetoss, who is of Native American descent and originally from Duluth, Minnesota, said his connection to the Mission began during a period of personal hardship. After leaving the military, he experienced homelessness for approximately two years while living in the Grand Forks area. During that time, he and his mother relied on the shelter for meals, a practice that continued until he found stable housing with family.
The former soldier stated that he sought employment that matched his culinary skills but did not initially consider working at a shelter. He described the transition into the management role as comparable to his military duties, though on a smaller scale. "At first, I looked at it just like, 'well it's just another job,'" Hawpetoss said. "The more I kind of grew into the role, the more I felt like I needed to do more."
In his current position, Hawpetoss manages kitchen staff, handles client interactions, and coordinates donations. He noted that the job represents a significant responsibility and a step up from his previous duties. He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to lead the kitchen team.
Hawpetoss plans to integrate elements of his Native American cultural background into the workplace, a practice he observed frequently while growing up in Duluth. He believes this cultural connection supported his own stability and hopes it will benefit other staff and clients.
The Mission is currently preparing for its annual Thanksgiving Community Meals Program. Reservations open on November 2, with volunteers scheduled to deliver meals to families in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
The organization is currently accepting donations, with a specific need for pasta, fresh fruit, and proteins such as beans and frozen meat. Individuals may drop off items at the Mission's front door or call 701-772-6600, extension 1007, before delivering larger quantities.
