Voters in Mississippi, Alaska, and Kansas will wait until Wednesday evening or later to learn who holds key state offices. The Associated Press has not declared winners in two Senate contests and two gubernatorial races as of noon Eastern time. These delays stem from razor-thin margins that fall within the statistical range of error.

The slow certification follows a wave of Democratic victories that shifted control of both chambers of Congress. Democrats flipped seats in districts where Republicans held strong advantages two years ago. In the House, 59 races involving party control remain undecided.

In Mississippi, Democrat Scott Colom leads Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by a few dozen votes. The state lacks an automatic recount mechanism, so a challenger must petition a court to trigger a recount. In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola holds a 626-vote lead over incumbent Dan Sullivan with 74% of votes counted. Alaska law requires ranked-choice voting if no candidate reaches 50% of the total.

Alaska’s governor’s race also awaits a final count. Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins leads Republican Bernadette Wilson by 20 percentage points. Kreiss-Tomkins has 49.2% of the vote with 74% of ballots counted. This race also proceeds to a second round if no candidate surpasses the 50% threshold.

Kansas presents the tightest governor’s race. Democrat Cindy Holscher leads Republican Ty Masterson by 5,557 votes with 98% of the count completed. Both candidates currently serve in the state Senate, where Masterson presides. This contest follows a historic win by Democrat Adam Hamilton, who secured a U.S. Senate seat in the state for the first time in nearly a century.

The AP does not project outcomes. It declares a winner only when the trailing candidate cannot mathematically close the gap. Officials in the four states will continue tabulating remaining ballots to determine final results.
