Anna Bokhan has spent the last decade helping Charlotte residents reshape how they see themselves in the mirror. As the founder of MARA Cosmetic Tattoo Studio and Academy, she specializes in restorative cosmetic tattooing, a practice focused on softening physical marks left by trauma, surgery, and medical conditions.
Bokhan appeared on the WBTV series "Coffee & Conversations" on November 3 to discuss her work. Host Jana Angel interviewed Bokhan at Community Matters Cafe, a location that serves as a training ground for graduates of the Charlotte Rescue Mission. The setting underscored the theme of rebuilding confidence and life skills.
Bokhan did not start with a formal education in cosmetology. After immigrating to the United States, she held several jobs that left her without a sense of fulfillment. She told her parents she intended to use her savings to learn eyebrow tattooing. Although the career shift seemed unusual to her family, Bokhan believed it was the correct path for her professional life.
Now, ten years into her career, she operates an international business from her studio in the Queen City. While she performs standard enhancements like lip blush, powder brows, and subtle eyeliner, her primary focus is on restoration. She works with clients who carry visible scars from past experiences, aiming to make those marks less prominent rather than erase them completely.
The process involves specialized techniques that blend pigment with the skin’s natural tones. Bokhan noted that her goal is not to mask a client’s uniqueness or follow fleeting beauty trends. Instead, she aims to create natural-looking results that allow individuals to feel grounded and ready to be seen in public.
Bokhan views every appointment as a personal interaction. She works with people who have undergone plastic surgery, experienced traumatic injuries, or were born with conditions such as cleft lips. The goal is to help these individuals reclaim their confidence by reducing the visual impact of their scars.
Beyond the studio chair, Bokhan has expanded her work into product development and education. She founded MARA Pro and TransformINK, which focus on professional products and training for new artists. These platforms also serve as spaces for transformation storytelling, where clients and artists share their experiences.
The episode featured Bokhan’s perspective on the intersection of artistry and healing. She emphasized that the choice to invest in one’s own appearance often begins with the act of healing. By addressing physical reminders of the past, clients can take up more space in their own lives without being defined by their scars.
The interview took place in a live learning lab environment. Community Matters Cafe supports graduates from the Charlotte Rescue Mission through a 180-day program. The program focuses on life skills and rehabilitation, aiming to build confidence and restore hope. The cafe provided a fitting backdrop for a conversation about personal transformation.
Bokhan’s approach challenges traditional definitions of beauty by prioritizing how a person feels over specific aesthetic features. Her work serves a niche market in the Charlotte area where clients seek both cosmetic improvement and emotional relief. The studio continues to serve clients who want to soften their scars and move forward with greater self-assurance.
