Brighton defeated Manchester City 1-0 on Saturday to cut the gap to the Premier League leader to two points. The result marked the second consecutive league loss for City and gave Brighton their first away victory against the champions in 18 attempts.

Yasin Ayari scored the only goal in the 11th minute. He finished a move that put the visitors ahead. Manchester City pushed hard in the second half but could not break through. Brightons goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made key saves to preserve the lead.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler sought revenge for a League Cup loss to City on Wednesday. His team had led twice in that match before losing on penalties. Hurzeler expressed frustration with that outcome. The win on Saturday extended Brightons title hopes. They have no major trophies but have already beaten defending champions Arsenal this season.

City started the season with seven straight wins under manager Enzo Maresca. That run ended with this defeat. Maresca took over from Pep Guardiola. The 10-time English champions now face a legal battle that could affect their final standing.

City is appealing a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges of breaking financial rules. If the appeal fails, the club faces a severe points penalty. Relegation from the top flight is also possible. Arsenal can take the top spot if they avoid losing at Liverpool on Sunday.
