North Carolina hosts the top-ranked team in the nation on Halloween night at Kenan Stadium. The Tar Heels welcome Miami to Chapel Hill at 7:30 p.m., a matchup that pits a struggling local defense against the conference's most potent offense.
Miami enters the contest with a 7-0 record, including a 5-0 mark in the ACC. The Hurricanes have scored 49 points per game this season. They lead the ACC in scoring, total yardage, and passing offense. Quarterback Darien Mensah, a former Duke starter and Heisman favorite, has thrown for more than 2,100 yards with 22 touchdowns and one interception. He has also rushed for two scores.
The passing attack is supported by receiver Malachi Toney. Toney has 66 catches for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns. He averages 136 receiving yards per game. On the ground, Mark Fletcher and Javian Mallory form a dual-threat backfield. Mallory leads the team with 444 yards on 59 catches. Both backs have scored seven touchdowns.
UNC, currently 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference, faces a difficult task. The Tar Heels allow nearly 155 rushing yards per game. They also have injuries in the secondary, leaving them vulnerable to explosive plays. Miami's run defense is ranked among the best in the country, which will test UNC's ability to extend drives.
The Hurricanes' defense ranks 15th in the nation in points allowed per game. However, they allow opponents to convert on over 38% of third-down attempts. This weakness could offer UNC an opportunity to keep the ball on the field and limit Mensah's touches.
The teams last met in October 2023, when UNC won 41-31. UNC has won the last five meetings against Miami. The Hurricanes have not won in Chapel Hill since 2019. Miami plays Notre Dame next week, a factor that may influence their preparation for this contest.
