At least 40 people died when Russian aircraft dropped nine aerial bombs on a humanitarian aid distribution center in the village of Komyshuvakha, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The strike occurred in the Zaporizhzhia region, killing residents who had gathered to collect supplies. This incident marks one of the highest civilian death tolls in a single location since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

The facility, originally a school, served as both an underground shelter and a weekly supply depot for the local population. Rescue crews are currently searching through the rubble for survivors. Authorities estimate that at least 30 people remain trapped beneath the debris, while dozens are still missing. The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that the casualties include two rescuers and four police officers.

The attack followed the expiration of a brief local ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. That truce, brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump, allowed nearly 800 people to evacuate the area. Zelenskyy criticized the timing of the assault in a nightly video address, stating that Moscow chose to continue lethal strikes rather than building on the recent evacuation for de-escalation.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Zelenskyy described the strike as insane and expressed frustration with the limited global reaction. He argued that the incident, along with other war crimes, requires a strong international response. He warned that evil tends to escalate when it is left unanswered.

Ivan Fedorov, co-head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Defense Council, reported via Telegram that 59 people were missing following the strikes. This figure reflects the uncertainty surrounding the final toll as search efforts continue underground.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the attack targeted Ukrainian military units in Komyshuvakha and two other towns. Moscow asserted that up to 25 Ukrainian servicemen were killed in the operation, although the primary site was a civilian aid hub. The ministry also reported strikes on two power stations in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions as part of ongoing aerial operations.

The United States is scheduled to convene Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Abu Dhabi for peace talks in less than a week. The timing of the Komyshuvakha strike occurred one day after the Oleshky ceasefire expired and less than seven days before these scheduled negotiations begin.
