Residents of North Carolina’s 14th congressional district saw a shift in political control on Election Day. Republican Rep. Tim Moore lost his bid for re-election to Democratic challenger LaKesha Womack. This outcome marks a change for voters in Burke, Cleveland, Gaston, and Rutherford counties, as well as parts of Mecklenburg and Polk counties.

State election data confirms Womack received 147,388 votes, while Moore garnered 140,973. The margin of victory stands at 6,415 votes. Womack captured 51.1% of the total vote, compared to 48.9% for Moore. The district was previously considered a safe Republican seat.

Moore served in the state House of Representatives for 22 years before winning the congressional seat in 2024. His tenure in the U.S. House will end on Jan. 3, 2027, when Womack and other midterm winners are sworn in. Moore remains in office until that date.

Womack’s campaign faced an unusual obstacle in the final weeks of the race. She was served a criminal summons on Oct. 11 regarding a rental vehicle not returned in 2020. Her court date for that matter is scheduled for Nov. 10.

In a news release on Oct. 29, Womack addressed the allegations and personal health challenges. She cited a serious medical emergency and living with Type I diabetes as difficult chapters in her life. "Recovering physically was only part of the challenge," she stated. "Rebuilding financially and regaining stability required determination, resilience, and faith."

Womack took to social media early Wednesday morning to announce her win. She wrote, "THIS is what democracy looks like!!! When we vote, we WIN! Never doubt the power of your vote!" Her victory contributes to a wider trend in the 2026 election cycle, where Democrats gained control of both the U.S. House and the Senate.
