Spain’s Transport and Sustainable Mobility Minister, Óscar Puente, stepped down from his post on Tuesday.

His departure comes six days after a high-speed train collision in the southern suburbs of Madrid resulted in at least 69 fatalities. Puente disclosed his decision near the end of a multi-hour parliamentary hearing. He stated that a transport minister in a country like Spain cannot remain in office after two accidents of this severity in under a year. He called it a matter of political dignity, coherence, and empathy for the victims.

The October 28 crash occurred when a moving high-speed train struck another train that had stopped on the tracks. The sequence of events began when the communication system on the Madrid-Seville line, which is central to the safety infrastructure, suffered a critical failure. Madrid dispatchers took over control and signaled one train to continue moving despite another train being stopped ahead on the line.

This incident marks the second major crash on the Madrid-Seville route in 2026. In January, a train derailed and collided with an oncoming train more than two hours south along the same corridor. That earlier accident killed 46 people and remains under investigation. These events have raised fresh concerns about the safety of the national rail network, occurring just four weeks before national elections.

Spain’s high-speed rail network is the second largest in the world, trailing only China. It has operated for more than 30 years without a fatal accident until this year. Along with his resignation, Puente announced new safety measures for the rail system. These include improved conditions for control centers and a faster rollout of the standardized European Train Control System for signaling and safety.

Minister Óscar Puente told legislators that the decision was a matter of political dignity. The October 28 collision killed at least 69 people on the Madrid-Seville line. The next major event on the calendar is the national election in four weeks.
