Aid vehicles are set to enter the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky on Friday, marking the first major humanitarian delivery under a localized ceasefire that has held for 54 hours. Ukrainian officials confirmed that military units have cleared key roads of landmines to create a safe passage for the convoy. The truce, which began on Tuesday, offers a brief pause in fighting in the southern city, where approximately 2,000 civilians remain stranded without access to food or medical supplies.

The temporary agreement was brokered with the help of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo XIV. Both Russian and Ukrainian officials have cited the involvement of the White House in facilitating the deal. Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets stated on Thursday that both parties are adhering to the terms of the agreement without reported violations. His Russian counterpart, Yana Lantratova, confirmed that Russian engineers are actively working to de-mine the routes leading into Oleshky.

Lantratova indicated that her team was traveling to Oleshky for the delivery, while Lubinets arrived in Belarus to enter the city from the north. She described the operation as five months in the making. The ceasefire is scheduled to last six days, a window intended to allow for both the delivery of aid and the evacuation of local residents into either Russian or Ukrainian territory. The specific logistics for the evacuation have not been fully detailed by either side.

While the truce holds in the south, violence continued elsewhere in Ukraine. A jet-powered Russian drone struck two passenger trains stopped at a station in Dnipro, killing at least 14 people and injuring 10 others. In the northern city of Chernihiv, a Russian cruise missile killed two 15-year-old girls. Additionally, two civilians died when a drone hit an apartment block in Kremenchuk, central Ukraine.

Russian air defenses reported downing 1,214 Ukrainian drones overnight in one of the largest attacks launched by Kyiv. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin noted that roughly half of the drones were targeted at the Russian capital. Despite the ongoing aerial exchanges, the stillness in Kherson, a Ukrainian-held city near Oleshky, has been palpable. Residents who previously stayed indoors or moved quickly to avoid drone threats have returned to the streets.

Nataliia Myronenko, a 42-year-old vendor at a coffee kiosk in Kherson, reported a steady stream of customers during lunch and evening hours, a shift from the previous pattern of people rushing to avoid open areas. She described the pause as a "breath of freedom," noting that while people still watch their footing for mines, the fear of aerial strikes has lifted. "It’s such a privilege and a joy, but we understand it will end soon," she said.

The localized truce occurs against a backdrop of shifting diplomatic dynamics. Moscow and Kyiv are both seeking favorable positions with Washington ahead of potential three-way talks scheduled for next month. President Donald Trump has recently signaled a disengagement from Kyiv, waiving some sanctions on Russia and criticizing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled to travel to Atlanta for a G20 ministerial meeting starting Friday.

European leaders continue to work toward diplomatic isolation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing his invasion and a campaign of sabotage across the continent. Meanwhile, Putin commented on his relationship with Elon Musk, calling him a "genius." The Russian leader said Moscow is coordinating with SpaceX on orbital activities as Russia builds its own satellite internet system. He emphasized that despite political issues, the two nations continue to work closely together on technology.

The next phase of the Oleshky operation begins Friday with the arrival of the humanitarian convoy. Ukrainian and Russian teams will oversee the delivery and the initial evacuation of civilians. The six-day window remains in effect, with both sides monitoring for violations as military units maintain their positions around the city.
