Ines Gomez Mont, a former Mexican television presenter, was arrested in Miami, Florida, on Friday, October 30. Mexican federal prosecutors announced the detention on the same day. She had been a fugitive in the country for five years.
The Mexican Attorney General's Office stated that Gomez Mont faces an active arrest warrant. Authorities cited her probable involvement in a crime of equivalent tax fraud. An order for her arrest was issued in September 2021. This order also applied to her husband, Victor Manuel Alvarez Puga. The initial charge against the couple was alleged money laundering.
Prosecutors linked Gomez Mont and Alvarez Puga to a scheme involving the diversion of public funds. They also alleged the use of fake contracts and shell companies to move money. The legal process is now underway to determine if the couple is guilty or innocent.
In July 2022, the newspaper Reforma reported on a separate legal development. A judge at the Northern Detention Center's Federal Criminal Justice Center issued another arrest warrant for Gomez Mont. This second warrant stemmed from a possible tax fraud case. Specifically, it involved the evasion of 320,000 dollars in taxes in 2015.
Media outlets and journalist Jenaro Villamil shared a photo taken at the moment of her capture. In the image, Gomez Mont appears handcuffed and looking directly at the camera. She is wearing a white sleeveless shirt, light blue shorts, and white sneakers. Two American police officers hold her by the arms.
Gomez Mont posted on Instagram on September 6, 2021, just days before the arrest order was issued. That post was the last time she shared photos of herself on the platform. She appeared in the images with friends Arianna da Gama and Daniela Rodriguez. The caption mentioned they were working on surprises together.
She was a well-known actress in the youth telenovela Tric Trac. Her detention marks the end of a lengthy period away from Mexican jurisdiction. The next step in the legal process will be determined by the courts in Mexico.
