Brazilian officials summoned Argentina’s diplomatic representative on Thursday afternoon to demand explanations. The meeting occurred after Flávio Bolsonaro, the defeated presidential candidate, traveled through Argentina to reach Miami. A diplomatic source with knowledge of the talks, who requested anonymity because the matter is not yet public, confirmed the summons.

Brazil’s foreign ministry acted to address the transit of a candidate who is currently the subject of two investigations. The probes allege corruption and money laundering. Bolsonaro, 45, refused to concede the election held on Sunday. He has labeled the results fraudulent, though he has not provided supporting evidence for that claim.

Argentina’s President Javier Milei backed Bolsonaro’s candidacy. Milei has not yet acknowledged Lula’s victory, a stance that distinguishes him from other regional allies of U.S. President Donald Trump who congratulated the incumbent quickly. The lack of formal recognition adds tension to an already strained relationship between the two governments.

Diplomatic ties between the nations deteriorated in July. Brazil recalled its ambassador after Milei insulted Brazilian officials during a visit to Sao Paulo. At that event, Milei called Lula a “thief” and a “delinquent.” Argentina subsequently recalled its own ambassador. Both countries now rely on chargés d’affaires, a lower diplomatic rank, to manage their interests.

João Marcelo, the director of Brazil’s South America department, met with Argentina’s chargé d’affaires, María Emilia Cortés. The source described the meeting as brief. Argentine spokesperson Juan Pablo Carreira said on social media that the administration rescued Bolsonaro “from the claws of communism, which seeks to imprison all opposition figures.”

U.S. President Trump described the election as “rigged” and “very strange.” He said he gave Bolsonaro a “pass” to enter the country. The U.S. administration approved visas for Bolsonaro and his family this week. In his first remarks since leaving Brazil, Bolsonaro thanked both leaders. “I want to thank President Milei, for the courage, sense of justice and legality, and Trump and the marvelous American people for welcoming me,” he said.

Former President Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio’s father, is serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup. He also refused to accept the 2022 loss to Lula. The current situation leaves Brazil’s government managing a diplomatic dispute while its top opponent operates from the United States.
