Harry Kane is the betting favorite to win the 2026 Ballon d'Or, with bookmakers placing his odds at approximately 70 percent. The announcement will take place at the London Palladium on October 26. The award recognizes the best player in men's football for the 2025-26 season.
Three players stand out in the race: Kane, Lamine Yamal, and Kylian Mbappe. Avisia, a French artificial intelligence firm, rates Yamal as the statistical favorite. The company assigns the 19-year-old Barcelona winger a 23 percent probability of winning. Kane follows at 21 percent, while Mbappe and Rodri both sit at 19 percent. Lionel Messi holds 18 percent, with a potential record-extending ninth title. Avisia noted that its model correctly predicted the top five finishers for the 2025 award, which Ousmane Dembele claimed.
Player opinions diverge from the betting markets. Jude Bellingham supports Kane, describing him as an honest and hard-working individual who is definitely possible for the win. Anthony Gordon backs Yamal, stating the teenager is on a whole other level. Aurelien Tchouameni supports Mbappe, citing an incredible season for the French striker. Diego Simeone and Marco Materazzi argue for Messi, pointing to his performance at age 38 after his recent international retirement.
Statistical records present a complex picture for the top contenders. Mbappe led La Liga with 25 goals and topped the Champions League with 15. He also took the World Cup Golden Boot and set a tournament record with 12 goals. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi scored 82 in 2011-12. However, trophy counts complicate these arguments. Mbappe won no major trophies with club or country, while Kane won the Bundesliga but finished third at the World Cup with England.
Yamal's case rests on major silverware. He won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona, despite an injury-hampered season. Historical data favors players with major team successes. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners failed to take the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America in their winning year. A victory for Yamal would make him the youngest recipient in the award's history, surpassing the record held by Brazil's Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.
