Michelle Hooper has exited Searchlight Pictures, ending a 20-year tenure as executive vice president of marketing. Her departure marks the conclusion of a period where her oversight of publicity, awards, and creative strategy contributed to nearly 200 Oscar nominations for the studio.

During her time at the company, which began in 2006, Searchlight secured 49 Academy Awards. The studio’s best picture victories included 'Nomadland,' 'The Shape of Water,' 'Birdman,' '12 Years a Slave,' and 'Slumdog Millionaire.' The studio also earned more than 130 Golden Globe nominations, with best picture nods for the same five titles plus 15 others.

Hooper was actively managing campaigns for 'Wild Horse Nine' and 'Behemonth!' during the current awards season. A longtime colleague described her as a leader with creative insights and an ability to position films within the cultural moment. The colleague noted that Hooper was a formidable collaborator who could close campaigns by listening to real-time feedback. The colleague called her departure a loss for the studio but predicted it would be a gain for another organization.

Before joining Searchlight, Hooper served as the director of entertainment communications at CBS Entertainment, where she helped shape the publicity strategy for 'Survivor.' She previously spent four years as vice president of entertainment publicity at Fox Broadcast. In that role, she worked on campaigns for television series including 'The Simpsons,' 'Arrested Development,' and 'American Idol.'

Variety included Hooper in its 2025 Women’s Impact Report. The publication credited her and fellow executives Rebecca Kearey, DanTram Nguyen, and Katie Goodson with ensuring a strong year for the studio at the Oscars. The team’s efforts resulted in 10 Academy Award nominations for 'A Complete Unknown' and 'A Real Pain.' Kieran Culkin won the award for best supporting actor for his performance in the Jesse Eisenberg film.

In a joint statement, the team explained that the studio’s success relies on adventurous choices and deep relationships with filmmakers. They stated that the company navigates industry challenges by trusting that audiences still want films that entertain, challenge, and provoke.
