Formula 1 returned to the United States this weekend at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The event has evolved from a risky addition to a major destination on the racing calendar. Among the three US races, Austin is the primary draw for dedicated fans.

The track differs from the temporary street circuits used in Miami and Las Vegas. It is a permanent facility designed with extensive run-off areas rather than concrete barriers. Motorcycle racer Kevin Schwanz designed the layout, while Herman Tilke’s company handled only the buildings and infrastructure. The course features varied corner speeds, challenging turn sequences, heavy braking zones, and significant elevation changes.

The site has undergone substantial physical changes since the first United States Grand Prix in 2012. Hospitality structures now cover the grassy banks that previously surrounded the track. One of these buildings connects to the paddock via a cable car. The complex includes two swimming pools. New landscaping has also been added to the grounds.

The venue has diversified its operations beyond racing. Rollercoasters and amusement rides now occupy the fringes of the property. These additions are part of a strategy to combine a theme park, a concert venue, and a race track into a single entertainment hub. The site also hosts the Lone Star Le Mans races in September, alongside events from the World Endurance Championship and IMSA.

Ars Technica has visited the facility multiple times in various capacities. Staff have driven the track in vehicles ranging from an Audi TT-S to a Corvette ZR1. They have also covered technical aspects of the sport, including broadcast production, tire design by Pirelli, and data management strategies. The organization has attended events as both experts and novices to document the racing experience.
