The nonprofit aims to reduce impaired driving incidents by offering ride credits to residents aged 21 and older in the D.C. metro area.

Impaired driving remains a leading cause of fatal crashes in the United States, prompting local nonprofits to intervene during peak drinking periods. The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) is distributing ride credits this weekend to help drivers avoid operating vehicles under the influence.
The SoberRide program operates from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31. Residents 21 and older can access the offer by entering a specific code into the payment section of the Lyft app. This grants a credit of up to $15 for a ride within Lyft’s service area.
Codes will be posted at soberride.com at 9 p.m. on both October 30 and 31. The service covers the City of Alexandria and extends to parts of D.C., Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties. It also includes cities in Maryland such as Bowie, Gaithersburg, and Rockville, as well as Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
WRAP president Kurt Erickson pointed to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data to justify the campaign. He noted that 29.2% of U.S. traffic fatalities in 2024 involved a drunk driver. Erickson added that among 21 to 34-year-olds killed in crashes between 2019 and 2024, 54% involved drunk drivers.
Last Halloween, 4,056 people in the D.C. region used the SoberRide program. Since 1991, WRAP has provided more than 100,000 safe rides home. The organization also runs similar initiatives on Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, and Independence Day. WRAP has been present at Alexandria City Public Schools during Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 23 to 31.
