Democrats won control of the Senate and House in the November 2026 midterm elections. The party flipped Republican-held seats in some of the nation's most conservative states. This result marked a sharp reversal from the 2024 cycle.

The party also captured key governorships and state legislatures. Democratic National Committee chairman Ken Martin described these results as the party's best in a century in an interview with Morning Edition.

Martin said voters sent a clear message. He stated that Americans are looking for leaders who fight for them, not just the wealthy and well-connected. He argued that Democrats received a mandate to address affordability, health care, and a system that benefits wealthy Americans.

The party now has control of Congress and state governments. Martin said this position gives Democrats great leverage. He noted that President Trump still holds veto power, which remains a factor in policy changes.

Martin acknowledged that opposition to the president helped drive the results. However, he said voters also embraced the Democratic message. He claimed candidates ran for a positive vision rather than against their opponents.

The new Democratic leadership will now work to implement their promises. The party aims to use its expanded power to shape policy during the final two years of the current administration.
