Two independent members of parliament have publicly rebuked Opposition Leader Angus Taylor over his handling of the aftermath of the attack on Indi MP Helen Haines. The criticism emerged on Monday as parliament resumed in Canberra, one week after the incident outside Haines's electorate office in northern Victoria. Ryan and Steggall labeled Taylor's remarks tone deaf, arguing that he failed to read the room during a sensitive period for the chamber.

Haines lost both legs in the attack. A 43-year-old man has been charged with the offense, and police are continuing their investigation without disclosing an established motive. The incident has intensified scrutiny on the safety of lawmakers and the intensity of political discourse in Australia.

Taylor rejected the notion that parliamentary behavior contributes to political violence. In his speech, he stated that while some suggested a causal link between robust debate and violence, he disagreed with that view. He argued that the Westminster system is designed to settle differences through rigorous discussion, not physical force. Taylor maintained that those who resort to intimidation or violence cross a line that must never be crossed.

The opposition leader also urged judges to impose stricter penalties on those found guilty of intimidation or violence. He suggested that Australia should be celebrated more frequently, contending that many people have been taught to feel guilt and shame about the country's history. While he acknowledged Labor was right to call out far-right extremism, he urged that all forms of extremism be rejected.

Independent MP Zali Steggall, who sits beside Haines in the lower house, expressed personal disappointment with the speech. She stated that there is a direct link between words and actions, and she did not feel Taylor had grasped the lesson Haines would want the public to learn. Steggall noted that she spoke with Haines's husband, Phil Haines, on Monday. He asked MPs to raise the bar for debate so that a meaningful shift toward respect would be evident by the time Haines returns to parliament.

Monique Ryan, the independent member for Kooyong, described the response as hugely disappointing. She questioned how Taylor could aspire to lead a political party if he did not believe the words used in politics matter. Ryan argued that if parliament could not rise to the occasion after such an unthinkable event, it likely never would.
