300 House Staff to Observe Close Midterm Races
Rep. Joe Morelle detailed a national deployment plan to monitor tabulation in 60 to 70 jurisdictions where results may be tight.

Rep. Joe Morelle, D-N.Y., announced Friday that 300 House staff members have volunteered to serve as observers in approximately 60 to 70 locations across the country. The deployment is designed to monitor the tabulation of votes in races expected to yield close results in the upcoming midterm elections.
Morelle, the Ranking Member on the Committee on House Administration, stated that the team will provide firsthand, contemporaneous notes and observations during the counting process. This strategy aims to ensure that if legal challenges arise, Democrats will have personnel on the ground who witnessed the result tabulation.
The committee has jurisdiction over federal election law. Morelle said he was charged by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries to lead a caucus-wide effort to secure the election. He stated that the goal is to prevent President Donald Trump from successfully subverting the vote through various interference attempts.
The Trump administration has repeatedly suggested that tens of thousands of immigrants and other ineligible voters are casting ballots. In contrast, the Justice Department has charged only a few dozen people with election-related crimes this year. On Monday, President Trump posted on Truth Social that he would offer a $1 million award for reporting voter fraud.
In the days leading up to the midterms, the administration attempted to intervene in elections in Alaska and California. Both efforts were blocked by federal courts on the eve of Election Day. In Alaska, a federal judge threw out a lawsuit that sought to block state officials from certifying U.S. Senate race results. The lawsuit focused on voter confusion caused by two candidates with similar names on the ballot.
In California, the Supreme Court rejected an attempt to force the state to set aside 20,000 ballots. The administration claimed the ballots belonged to likely noncitizens. Morelle said the oversight effort includes lawmakers, litigators, activists, and organizers deployed nationwide.
Morelle asserted that every eligible American must have an opportunity to cast a meaningful ballot. He stated that voting in America must be free from threats, intimidation, and violence. He added that ballots cast by voters must be counted fairly and accurately.
