DoorDash Bids $17 Billion to Buy Instacart
The move aims to consolidate the grocery delivery market by combining two major rivals.

Grocery shoppers in the United States may see fewer service options when DoorDash completes its $17 billion acquisition of Instacart. The transaction represents a major consolidation in the online grocery sector, merging two of the largest platforms for home delivery.
The offer values the combined entity at a premium to Instacart's current market price. By integrating its operations, DoorDash seeks to strengthen its position against traditional retailers that have expanded their own digital storefronts. The deal will require regulatory approval before the two companies can merge their customer databases, logistics networks, and driver fleets.
Both companies are currently focused on expanding their grocery offerings to capture a larger share of household spending. Instacart has grown its revenue through partnerships with major supermarket chains, while DoorDash has invested heavily in its direct-to-consumer logistics infrastructure. The merger would allow DoorDash to offer a wider variety of products and faster delivery times in markets where it currently lacks scale.
The acquisition signals a shift in strategy for DoorDash, which has primarily been known for restaurant food delivery. By absorbing Instacart, the company aims to become a dominant force in the daily essentials market. Shareholders of both firms will vote on the transaction, which is expected to close within the next twelve months.
Competitors in the space, including Amazon and Walmart, are likely to respond by adjusting their own pricing and service levels. The combined company will face scrutiny over how it manages its large pool of independent contractors. The deal is expected to be finalized before the end of the fiscal year, subject to customary closing conditions.
