Binance has estimated the financial impact of a major security incident at approximately $6.3 billion. The cryptocurrency exchange reported that unauthorized withdrawals occurred after an attacker gained access to the system through a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The company stated that its teams are working around the clock to resolve the issue safely and thoroughly.
The initial investigation indicated that the breach allowed for unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance noted that a subsequent review uncovered additional points of breach, though the company did not specify their locations. The exchange described the event as a complex attack and said it is coordinating with law enforcement partners to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
As an immediate precaution, Binance temporarily suspended all deposits and withdrawals while security checks were underway. The company emphasized that user funds are safe and that it will cover all losses using its SAFU fund and company reserves. Binance added that it will publish an updated Proof of Reserves once remediation is complete.
To mitigate the impact, the exchange worked with blockchain partners to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets on-chain. Binance said it is still gathering the facts and will share more information directly as it becomes available. The company promised to publish a detailed technical post-mortem once its investigation is complete and the facts have been verified.
The incident marks one of the largest estimated losses for the platform. The exchange confirmed that its teams are continuing to work with law enforcement to resolve the breach. No further details on the specific nature of the additional breach points were provided at this time.
